Details

In 1984, as a "gift to the city" First United Methodist Church of Los Angeles founded the Los Angeles United Methodist Urban Foundation. Over the years it has supported faith- and community-based programs throughout the region. In 2009, the foundation began providing direct services at Kid City: youth leadership, academic enrichment, and college access for low-income youth near its downtown office. More recently, it incubated the Museum of Social Justice, which now has its own non-profit status. Revenue comes from a small endowment, individual donors, special events, private foundations, and the generosity of the United Methodist Church.

WHAT’S YOUR SPECIALTY? WE HAVE A PLACE FOR IT.

At Kid City: Mentor or tutor a high school student. Lead a songwriting or poetry workshop. Teach violin, drums, or guitar. Go with us to museums, hiking, or the beach. Arrange a college visit to your alma mater. We also need a handy-person for odd jobs in our two program spaces, especially if you can bring your toolkit! And definitely, come splash with us at our annual “Splash of LA,” festival in August.

WANT TO HELP BUT DON’T WANT TO TRAVEL?

Online coaches (Kid City) work with students on personal statements. We’re also interested in setting up online math tutoring for college students confronting their first college-level math course. Let us know if you can help!

LOOKING FOR EXPERIENCE IN NON-PROFIT ADMINISTRATION?

The Urban Foundation loves volunteers too! Help manage our database, thank donors, staff our annual event, serve on a host committee, write social media, create beautiful graphics, even serve on our board!
